Intergenerational Technology Help Workshop
Program Overview
The Technology Help Workshop is an initiative where high school students provide one-on-one and group support to seniors who want to feel more comfortable using technology in their everyday lives. This program is designed to bridge the digital divide, give older adults practical skills, and foster meaningful connections.
Goals
Equip seniors with the knowledge and confidence to use devices, apps, and online platforms
Encourage independence in tasks such as video calling loved ones, sending emails, or exploring online resources
Reduce technology-related anxiety by creating a patient and friendly learning environment
Provide students with leadership, teaching, and communication opportunities while creating respect and empathy for their elders
Activities
Welcome & Introduction: A warm opening where students greet seniors and ask about their technology goals or challenges
Hands-On Learning Stations: High schoolers guide seniors through practical skills such as:
Using smartphones (calls, messages, contacts)
Setting up and navigating tablets or computers
Video calling with apps like Zoom or FaceTime
Email basics, photo sharing, or social media
Internet safety tips, online shopping, and avoiding scams
One-on-One Help: Students offer personalized support, ensuring each senior can learn at their own pace
Practice & Confidence Building: Seniors try out what they’ve learned with patient encouragement from students
Closing & Sharing: A reflection circle where participants share one new skill they’ve learned or a challenge they overcame
Outcomes
Seniors gain confidence, independence, and a sense of accomplishment in using technology to stay connected with family, friends, and resources
Students strengthen leadership and communication skills while learning patience and empathy
The program builds a sense of community, closing the gap between generations through shared learning and mutual respect
