Intergenerational Singing Together Workshop
Program Overview
The Singing Together Workshop is a joyful program bringing student volunteers and seniors together through music. Singing builds community and uplifts the spirit. This workshop offers a space for seniors and youth to share their voices, exchange energy, and connect. No prior singing experience is required—just a willingness to participate and enjoy the moment.
Goals
Foster intergenerational friendships through the shared experience of music
Boost seniors’ confidence, mood, and memory through singing familiar and meaningful songs
Provide high school students with opportunities to lead, collaborate, and learn from older generations
Create a supportive, fun atmosphere that celebrates the power of music to bring people together
Activities
Warm Welcome & Introductions: Students greet seniors and share a lighthearted icebreaker to set a positive tone
Vocal Warm-Ups: Simple breathing and singing exercises to loosen up voices and create comfort
Group Singing: High schoolers lead seniors in singing classic songs, popular favorites, or culturally significant tunes that resonate across generations
Call-and-Response & Duets: Interactive moments where students and seniors sing parts to each other, encouraging participation at all comfort levels
Sharing Stories Through Song: Seniors are invited to talk about personal memories connected to certain songs, while students share why certain pieces inspire them
Closing Circle: A final sing-along of a feel-good song, followed by reflections and gratitude from both students and seniors
Outcomes
Seniors experience joy, mental stimulation, and emotional connection through music and memory
Students gain leadership and communication skills, while learning empathy and appreciation for older generations
