Intergenerational Reading Together Workshop
The Reading Together Workshop is a youth-led program where high school students and seniors gather to share stories, poems, and meaningful conversations. In each session, students read aloud selected passages ranging from classic literature to uplifting short stories and poetry while seniors listen, respond, and join in creative discussions. This allows seniors to enjoy literature in a relaxed and engaging way, even if reading on their own feels challenging.
Beyond the reading itself, the workshop is designed to create a warm and welcoming space for connection. Seniors are encouraged to share personal memories sparked by the stories, while students bring fresh perspectives that open new conversations. These interactions foster deep bonds and friendships across age groups and through generations.
The workshop also provides cognitive and emotional benefits for seniors. Reading aloud helps stimulate memory, language, and imagination, while the social environment combats isolation and builds a sense of belonging. For the high schoolers, it is a chance to give back to their community, develop empathy, and learn from the life experiences of older generations.
Overall, the Reading Together Workshop is more than just a literary activity; It is a bridge between generations, where stories become a catalyst for meaningful connection, learning, and joy.
